SQLite with WAL mode—yes, the database everyone treats as a toy—will handle 90% of your read workloads faster, cheaper, and with less operational overhead. The benchmarks are clear. The data is public. But nobody wants to admit they’ve been over-engineering for a decade.
We’ve collectively decided that “real databases” need client-server architecture, connection pools, and replication slots. For what? So your blog can serve 50ms responses instead of 5ms?

But here’s the contradiction: most of these deployments saturate at under 500 queries per second. That’s SQLite territory. On a Raspberry Pi.

We’ve confused “enterprise-ready” with “appropriate.” They are not the same thing.

The emotional reality: you feel vulnerable without a “real” database. Like you’re not a serious engineer. This feeling, not data, drives your architecture decisions.
The Future Is Smaller Than You Think

This doesn’t mean Postgres is dead. It means Postgres is for the 10% of applications that need multi-node replication, complex window functions, or terabyte-scale datasets. Not for your SaaS dashboard serving 200 concurrent users.
The industry will bifurcate. The question is which side you’re on.
So What?
You’re overpaying for features you don’t use. Your application will be faster on SQLite with WAL mode than on PostgreSQL for 90% of read workloads under 10GB. The operational complexity drops to nearly zero. Backups become file copies. Migrations become file replacements. The cloud bill shrinks by 60%.
The only cost is admitting you were wrong. And that’s the hardest database migration of all.

Start with an audit. Map your actual query patterns, connection counts, and data size. If you’re under 10GB and read-heavy—and most web apps are—benchmark SQLite with WAL mode against your production Postgres instance. Use real traffic. Measure latency at the 95th percentile.
You’ll likely find SQLite wins. Then you face the hard choice: optimize for performance and cost, or optimize for conformity and career safety.
The database doesn’t care about your resume. But your users care about the 5x tax you’re charging them in latency.
Pick your tradeoffs. Just don’t pretend the data says something it doesn’t.
